A Certain Type Of Woman with Jo Clark and Nikki Parkinson
Beauty standards when it comes to media have been a controversial topic of discussion for decades. The representation of a certain type of woman has been evident on screen, in marketing and top of the social media algorithm. Today’s guest was previously a journalist and accidentally found her way into the world of the online at the young age of 41, long before it was an everyday part of our lives. As a result, Nikki Parkinson has long advocated for a disruption in the way that fashion is marketed to women. Styling You The Label is the first label globally to invest in showcasing its designs on every size that it sells – from 6 to 20. This increases customer confidence and flips the idea that fashion should only be seen on one size, height, age, colour, belief or ability. Nikki has a remarkable story and she shares it with me in today's wonderful discussion. Listen as Nikki and I chat about:
Growing up as a 70s wild child under unusual circumstances which were out of the norm and how that has shaped her beliefs and parenting today - specifically the outward confidence that gives inward confidence for her to succeed.
Modelist women which deterred her from entering into the media industry earlier in her career. How confidence played its part and the particular look which she felt she couldn’t live up to.
Putting work into relationships and being able to reflect and learn how to champion the interests of your partner and support their growth and change. How that was a major catalyst for having the courage to leave her former career.
Being in a product based industry and how simplicity of life is the end goal right now.
For Nikki, it’s a privilege to start a conversation and be able continue it with like-minded people anywhere in the world and I encourage you to follow her journey via her blog, website and Instagram @stylingyou and @stylingyouthelabel.
